PAPER TRADING — THE ONLY FREE LUNCH

Lesson 7 of 72 · 6 min read · Stage 0 · Before You Trade · Updated Oct 21, 2026
STAGE 0 — Before You Trade · Prerequisite: HOW GURUS MAKE MONEY (IT’S NOT TRADING)
TL;DR
  • Paper trading is the mandatory bridge between theory and money: mechanics, order types, chain navigation, and the journaling habit — practised free.
  • It cannot teach emotion, fills, slippage, or liquidity — and “house money” profits inflate risk-taking, so paper profit is not the gate. Process is.
  • Stage 0 ends with a decision you make in writing: certify the prerequisites and test yourself on paper — or take the exit, with full marks.

What fake money can teach, what it can’t — and the decision that finishes Stage 0. A flight simulator is the right comparison. It genuinely teaches the instruments, the checklists, and the procedures — pilots would be negligent to skip it. It does not teach what your hands do when the ground is real. So this course treats paper results the way aviation treats simulator hours: required, logged, and never confused with the real thing.

THE TAKEAWAYS

  • What paper teaches: mechanics — placing each order type, reading the chain, navigating your broker’s app — plus the journal habit, at zero financial risk.
  • What it cannot teach: the emotional weight of real losses, true fills and slippage, and real liquidity at your size. Paper fills are generous in ways the market is not.
  • The house-money trap: profits on fake money feel like skill and push position sizes up. The gate is process compliance — plan followed, size correct, every trade journaled — never paper profitability.
  • The sequence from here is fixed: Stages 1–3 knowledge, Stage 4 risk arithmetic and your paper account under course rules, Stages 5–6 options — and live money stays optional until Stage 10: tiny, and reversible.
RUSTY’S RULE
Paper first, process graded, profit ignored. If the process isn’t boring by the end of Stage 4, you’re not ready for Stage 5’s options.

WORKED EXAMPLE — STEP BY STEP

  1. Item one — the scenario check: this lesson’s quiz asks you to spot the scam pitch and the person who should not trade yet. Same skills as Lessons 5 and 6, applied cold. (The site’s quizzes are practice; the gate is the habit.)
  2. Item two — the self-certification: Lesson 4’s worksheet, five lines, signed. Either all five pass, or the failing line becomes your plan — fixing it is Stage 0 completed the slow way.
  3. Item three — the stop-signs, re-read (Lesson 5). If any one of them is true, the decision below is “not now,” regardless of the other items.
  4. Then the decision itself, in the box under this lesson: certify and continue to paper testing — or “I decided not to trade — for now.” Both are recorded on this device, both complete Stage 0, and both can be revisited any time. There is no wrong door — only an unwritten one.
HOW PEOPLE FAIL A STAGE WITH NO EXAM

By drifting. No decision made, prerequisites half-checked, a real-money account opened “just to look” — and the first trade happens by momentum instead of by choice. Every statistic in Lesson 2 describes people who drifted into the market exactly that way. Stage 0’s only real failure mode is skipping the decision.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER EACH DOOR

Continue: the path resumes at Stage 1 — open now, directly after this lesson in the path — and runs on through Stages 2, 3 and 4 — also open — to the options lessons of Stages 5–6, Stage 7’s first defined-risk trades, Stage 8’s trade management and Stage 9’s craft of journal and PlayBook, which are open too. Stage 10 — the optional live stage — is open now, directly after Stage 9 in the path; the map on this page says so plainly. Exit: nothing is deleted, nothing is locked, and no email will chase you — there isn’t one to send. The course will be here, with more of it built, whenever “for now” expires. Deciding later, with the same evidence, is not falling behind; it is the skill this stage teaches.

COMMON BEGINNER MISTAKES

  • Treating a winning paper month as proof of readiness — house money inflates exactly that conclusion.
  • Skipping the journal on paper trades “because they aren’t real.” The habit is the cargo; the money is not.
  • Making the Stage 0 decision by drift — account first, decision never.
  • Reading the exit as a verdict. It’s a scheduling and fitness decision — recorded, reversible, and respected here.

CHECK YOURSELF

Q1. Paper trading cannot teach…

Q2. The paper-trading gate (Stages 0–4) is…

Q3. You reach the decision box and choose “not to trade — for now.” Stage 0 records that as…

DO IT — MAKE THE DECISION

Use the decision box directly below this lesson. Certify (prerequisites met, stop-signs clear) and continue — or take the exit, for now. Either way, add one sentence under your Lesson 1 sentence: what you decided, and the date. Two sentences; that’s the whole stage, honestly done.

THE STAGE 0 DECISION

Two doors, and both complete Stage 0. Door one: you certify — the five money prerequisites (Lesson 4) are in place and the stop-signs (Lesson 5) are clear — and you continue to testing yourself on paper. Door two: not yet, or not for me. Your choice is recorded on this device only, and you can change it any time.
