YOUR ROBINHOOD CHAIN, DECODED

Lesson 36 of 72 · 5 min read · Beginner · Updated Oct 21, 2026
STAGE 5 — Options I: The Contract, The Chain, Expiry · Prerequisite: PUTS: THE RIGHT TO SELL
TL;DR
  • Read the chain in order: expiry pill (your DTE) → delta column → theta and IV → bid/ask.
  • Hunt 0.50–0.65 delta; skip the rest without a written reason.
  • Never market-order: walk a limit from the midpoint.

Read the chain you'll actually tap: expiry, delta, theta, IV, bid/ask. The Robinhood chain is the shelf at the store: every row is a contract, every column a fact about it. Read the shelf in the right order and you stop grabbing the wrong box.

THE TAKEAWAYS

  • The expiry pill is your DTE — it decides how fast theta bleeds you.
  • Scan the delta column first: hunt 0.50–0.65, skip the rest without a reason.
  • Bid/ask: never market-order. Walk a limit from the midpoint.
RUSTY’S RULE
Scan delta first, check theta and IV, then walk the midpoint.

WORKED EXAMPLE — STEP BY STEP

  1. Open the SPY chain and tap the expiry pill first — that choice sets your DTE and your rent clock.
  2. Scan the delta column and stop at the first contract between 0.50 and 0.65.
  3. Check its theta and IV against the lesson rules, then read the bid/ask: your limit order starts at the midpoint — (bid + ask) ÷ 2 — and walks a few cents at a time. (The prices in the picture are the real Oct 9 chain; the method is the lesson.)
HOW THIS TRADE LOSES

The losing variant never reaches the chart: a market order into a wide spread fills at the ask on the way in and the bid on the way out — you donated the spread before the trade even started.

WHAT TIME & IV DO TO IT

The expiry pill you pick sets two clocks: theta (rent per day, faster near expiry) and IV (event premiums baked into headline-driven expirations). Same strike, different shelf row, different trade.

COMMON BEGINNER MISTAKES

  • Market orders into a wide bid/ask — you donate the spread.
  • Strike-shopping by price instead of scanning delta first.
  • Ignoring the expiry pill and buying the wrong clock.
  • Skipping the bid/ask check entirely.

CHECK YOURSELF

Q1. First column to scan in the chain?

Q2. The expiry pill on the chain decides…

Q3. How do you place the buy?

DO IT ON PAPER

Open the SPY chain in Robinhood. Find the expiry pill, the delta column, and one contract at 0.50–0.65 delta. Read its bid and ask, and work out the midpoint — the price your limit order would start from. Log it in your journal.
